clearly I've made a few changes to my blog in the last week or two, and I know I haven't been posting much lately but it's just that I haven't had a lot to say. it's the same old same old around here. making soap, dreaming of making jewelry, keeping the dogs and myself exercised, keeping the house clean, pulling some weeds, dreaming about landscaping, etc. you know how it is. spring makes me think more about living, and less about etsy, but I promise I'm not going anywhere. just taking advantage of the fact that sales are slower now, and trying new things with the extra time.

so that brings me to the point of this post. the look. what do you think? I added that black and white background to the page about a week ago, and I really like it, but part of me also worries that it's distracting and makes the page look too busy. and since it's important to me that my blog is friendly on the eyes, as well as fun to read and interesting to look at... what do you think?

Easy Ranch and Herb Chicken...

Kevin does the grocery shopping and he's gotten pretty savvy at it. One thing he always makes sure we have on hand is frozen chicken breasts that come in a big bag.
Of course fresh chicken breasts would be even better, but in times of penny pinching, they are affordable and you can make many meals out of one of those big bags of chicken.

One of my favorite throw together recipes, is for baked chicken breast with ranch dressing drizzled over the top.
If you can put your imagination into that without a recipe, be my guest, it's *so* good no matter how you doctor it up!

My basic recipe though is this, and feel free to change it to your own tastes however you choose...

you'll need:
• small glass baking dish
• 4 chicken breasts, thawed {extend cooking time if frozen}
• olive oil
• your favorite herbs or two or three
• black pepper
• lemon pepper
• Hidden Valley Ranch {or your favorite ranch dressing}
• 1/4 cup water

how to make it:
• preheat the oven to 350* fahrenheit
• drizzle a small amount of olive oil in the bottom of the dish, and spread it around
• place 4 chicken breasts into the dish
• pour 1/4 cup of water into the bottom of the dish
• drizzle ranch dressing over each chicken breast, spread it out with a spoon or brush
• sprinkle your favorite herbs over the chicken
{i used thyme, basil and a little bit of rosemary}
• top with a dash of black pepper and/or lemon pepper

bake for 30 minutes at 350*
or until chicken is juicy but not pink. {oven times may vary}
side ideas: salad, garlic bread, mashed potatoes, oven baked red potatoes, steamed seasonal veggies, asparagus, etc.

I pretty much know nothing when it comes to building websites, doing graphics design, making banners, buttons and such like that. zilch. nada. nothing. Everything I ever have done to my blog was by the help of some kind soul on the internet who gladly posted a tutorial on their own blog, for all to share.

ShabbyBlogs.com is one of those great sites, because it's just an amazing resource of blog backgrounds, headers, banners, and other shabby graphics that you can use at your disposal, to help fancy up your own website.

All of the elements on her blog are for personal use only, not for commercial use, or to be shared or resold, but they are still totally awesome and worth having as a resource. And, as if the free graphics weren't enough, there are install buttons located next to all the background images, so that you can upload them right to your blog. No questions asked.

I wanted to give a special shout out, and a special thanks too, because I found the element in my banner at ShabbyBlogs.com quite a while ago and have loved using it as part of my banner. Today when I thought maybe it would be fun to see what new backgrounds were listed on the site, I found this gorgeous butterfly motif that I LOVE, and decided it was time to bring them back up again...

monday musings...

It's been a busy couple of weeks and I haven't had a lot new to show you, but I'm working on it. I finished up the last couple of collages I wanted to work on last week (still have two more to photograph and list in the shop), but I'm feeling like working on jewelry this week, so that's it... the pendulum swings again. I also put in a nice little soap supply order over the weekend, and will be bringing you a few new soaps next week too, so check back soon for that.

so they say... It's supposed to be 63* today, so that means I'm finishing up early this afternoon, and Kevin and I are going to take the doggies on a little nature walk. I'm super excited that spring has pretty much arrived around here. We'll still have a few chilly nights, possibly another frost or two but nothing to be really afraid of.
Spring is here, spring is here!

I also have some flower seeds that I picked up the other day that I am thinking about starting indoors just to feed my need for playing in the soil. I found a super cute idea on twitter last week about how to plant and grow seedlings in toilet paper rolls by MakeItAndMendIt, so I'm going to give that a try. I figure if they don't live (or more like Posey knocks them off the windowsill and they turn to mush, like she did her catnip) I'll just wait another few weeks and sprinkle the seeds outside then instead. I have cosmos, California poppy's, forget me nots and shasta daisies, all of which are fairly easy to keep alive in the summer months... but I have no idea how easy they are to seed.
We shall find out. ♥

A dear friend of mine who's over qualified to say the least, has decided to join the artist community in a little way of her own. Meet Cheryl, also known as Cher, also known as Raven Muse, also known as Mom to two boys (one who's autistic) and Wife to one lucky guy. Also known as one of the founders of Autism Delaware, which is now a very large and successful chapter, in helping provide knowledge and resources to those touched by autism.

By day Cheryl is a teacher, a wife, a mother, a friend, project director for Autism Delaware, a practicing Reverend for those in need, and more. Though by night, she yearns for travel and leisure, just like the rest of us.

In pursuit to following her dreams, Cheryl has turned to her love for graphics design, and is now offering her services to artists and crafters and small businesses alike. She'll be opening up an etsy shop eventually (if I keep bugging her about it, haha) but she can be found for now, via her blog and her website. we had a beautiful weekend of sunshine to it's fullest and I enjoyed every minute of it. today it's partly cloudy and I think we are approaching rain again, but it's perfectly okay because i'm ready to hunker into my studio chair and get back to creating.

i have this itch to plant things and dig in the dirt and move the bricks around and re-do the shape of the flower bed, and and and... but it's not time yet.

though, this song helps me get back into the mood of those cozy cloud covered days. when mixed with days of sunshine,
more rain is most welcomed.

signs of spring...

since Oregon is kind of like rain country in the winter, by the time spring starts rolling around, everything is already starting to grow again. it's a really special time of year around here, because while it does stay lush and green during the rain season, everything that has waited quietly for winter to pass, is now finally getting it's chance to burst and bloom.

new growth is showing up everywhere... I even found a few little mushrooms in the moss under our back porch this morning.

this summer I hope to do some landscaping in our yard.
I mentioned a while back that we only have a side yard, no traditional back yard... and it has become my quest to find a way to make more use of it's space this year.

i am dreaming of all things spring.

today I was working on some new collages, and it was as if my muse decided it was time we meet. I decided to name her Stella, because she's much bolder than I am. she's constantly trying to get me to 'play with color' and 'just go for it' and 'you'll never know unless you try'... she likes to pick on me. she's sort of like my nag that lives on my left shoulder and the encourager that lives on my right. me. I am pretty ordinary, if you ever really meet me.

stella however, has pushed my buttons once and for all...
and look at what happened.

I couldn't wait for daylight to take pictures of these,
I just had to show you. ♥

If you don't hear from me for a while it's because i'm busy sipping coffee, drinking wine, hanging out with stella and listening to pandora.

Many moons ago, I made this little aceo, and I still remember perfectly the person who bought this piece. She told me of how it spoke to her as soon as she first saw it, and I have to agree. This piece is still by far my favorite of the many little works I've made. But I want to make more.

You all know that I spend most of my time making soap and jewelry, but every now and then I get the urge to feed the side of my soul that likes collage, playing with paints and getting messy. I've made a couple of new pieces to list, but it's been raining this way lately, so I haven't gotten the chance to photograph them yet. And, with the quest of branding my work some, I've been on the hunt for some antique botanical images that I can start incorporating too.

Every Thursday night I try to catch Oregon's ArtBeat on OPB... And, last night they featured a local artist that totally inspired me, even though her style is so different from anything I'd ever do. I love abstract art. It's beautiful. And even though some might see abstract art as simple or easy, or something that even a child could create... I bet it's actually harder to put your heart and soul into an abstract piece, than most might realize.

Carolyn Cole was the artist featured last night that really spoke to me, and I wanted to share the video clip with you because her way of thinking is so simple, yet I bet we could all somehow relate.

It's been quite a long time since I've added any collage art pieces to my shop, but I've had an itch to get my paints out again for quite some time now... though I've been waiting for just the right thing to inspire me, and I believe I have finally found her.

Aside from Carolyn's detailed abstracts that she creates on canvas, she also makes monotypes in her spare time, and that was what truly caught my eye. It was the way she simply put down a few colors, and rolled them out into this beautiful creation, that really got me going, because I've been trying to find a creative way of my own to start the base of some small canvases I have, that I'd finish with collage on top.

So, before I say more... Here's a link to her feature, I hope you find some inspiration from Carolyn's work, or her use of color, or simply from her gentle minded soul. Every week when I watch OPB's ArtBeat, I feel a little more inspired, a little more touched, a little more rewarded that I'm headed in the right direction. And I believe that we all need to be reminded of such things, because being an artist is more than just a lifestyle... it's a way to live.

Kings of Leon rock the Grammy's!!

Okay well I'm a day late and a dollar short on this one, but I wanted to give a shout out to the Kings of Leon for winning Record of the Year at the Grammy's!
Woot woot!

I first learned of the Kings of Leon a few years ago when I saw them on a British music television show, featuring new and up-and-coming bands. Oddly enough though, the Kings of Leon are three brothers and a cousin originally from Tennessee, and their original sound was of country blues, yet their first years of success were in the UK, not in the United States. It's inspiring to me because over the years they have found their own way, and are now at the top of the charts. Just goes to show that if you follow your heart, you really do come out on top in the end. So, I share with you, one of the first songs of theirs I ever heard,
and of course loved. The rest is history... ♥

monday musings...

We are back to rain here again. Just because I blogged about things growing around here, doesn't mean we've seen a lot of sun. What it is really, is 50 degree temps, cloud cover to keep things cozy, and lots and lots of rain. I do love it though. We had a beautiful sunny day on Saturday, so I took advantage and did some early spring cleaning in my flower beds. Pulled a few weeds, moved a few bulbs around and just got a general refreshing feeling from playing in the sun and the mud for a while.

This morning I was packing up an order, and had a small epiphany. It's been quite a long time now since I've settled on jewelry and soap primarily, but I've still never known what my true niche was, aside from simply trying to present things in my own special way. And then it hit me. This morning, the order I was shipping was a gift to another address. And, as I thought about it, adding my special touches... I realized that could very well be a niche shoe that I fill, though I just only realized it today.

I send out orders to gift recipients quite regularly. I'd say safely and honestly that at least 25% of my business, if not more, is orders sent to friends and relatives, packaged with a little extra care because I know it's a gift. Handwritten notes, punched gift tags, tissue paper and wrapping that tie everything together. I try. I really do. And in some way, it seems that I've finally realized something about myself...

I've always wanted to have a gift shop of sorts, and as it turns out, I actually already have one. I just never looked at it that way until today.

What have you learned about yourself lately? I'd love to hear some stories... They really do help make what matters, more special.

awww, I'm gonna have to eat crow!

Okay well maybe, not really.

Not completely.

After hemming and hawing over this for the last few days, I have come to the decision of keeping my handmade items on etsy, and selling my vintage bits on ebay. You might be shocked, but don't be. It's a win-win for us both really. It gives me full flexibility to sell whatever treasures I find without limits... And it gives you the opportunity to bid (if you so choose) on lots of little lovelies for a lower price than I would have listed them for on etsy.

I got rid of tons of stuff here recently, to make room for my vintage finds, but I'm quickly realizing that before I know it, that cabinet will be full again, and I'll have no place else to keep my inventory. So, the solution is to find a way to sell it faster. eBay. Everything might not sell for as high a price as I would have set it for in my etsy shop {that's a win for you!} but it will hopefully sell much faster, which means I can go treasure hunting for new things more often {a win for me!} and hopefully be able to help pay some of our bills with a little more ease.

So. Don't be offended. No disrespect to anyone who sells vintage on etsy, I admire so many of you. But for me, this is something I'd like to explore because I think it will fit my needs more suitably. And, as long as you've got a paypal account, you might as well have an ebay account too, it's only that simple. Plus they have a new eBay Bucks Rewards program coming to light... I earned $1.53 last quarter, simply by purchasing my bubble envelopes and a few beading supplies on ebay last fall. How cool is that?

Spring!

The holidays are over, new year's has past, football season is coming to an end... I am ready for spring! I know, I know... we still have two months to go before we can even think about spring, right? Well... not if you live in Oregon. The day lilies and daffodils are already starting to peek through the soil here, and my blessed strawberries are already sprouting new leaves. It will be a few weeks yet before the trees really start to pop their buds, but they are already thinking about it... lots of new growth around here lately. I'm ready! Bring on spring! Okay, so you might remember this post from a very long time ago... but it's back. ♥ vintage is back. And I'm so totally excited about it!

I know, I'm a big fat geek. So sign me up for dork club, I don't care. What night do you meet? I'll be there. Geek of all things chic, and slightly romantic, yet still a little fun and funky too. I don't know what you call my style really. But I hope it makes you smile and warms your soul.

Over the last few weeks I've vowed to myself to spend more time crafting, and less time fluffing around on the computer. You may have noticed my absence. But that's really only because I was trying to really tune into how I wanted to grow my shop this year, and I've decided it's time to take the plunge.

I have always in my heart wanted a gift shop of sorts. If I had a B&M, it would be filled with all sorts of things. Handmade things, vintage things, new things, old things, re-purposed things, recycled things... a boutique. But it wouldn't be horribly shabby either. Sometimes I feel like I'm leaning that way on etsy, and I have to tell you I'm trying to find balance because I also have a love for folk art. And, I love mugs.

Have I ever told you that? Oh my gosh, mugs. Mugs, teacups, whichever you may use... I love them. Big ones that need both hands to hold them, dainty ones that you can sip with two fingers, ones that have just the right curve, that you can fit your hand around it just perfectly, and carry it around all day. I personally love mugs like those on warm spring days where I'm out in my garden, barefoot in my pajamas, warm cup of coffee in one hand, and the other full of dirt, because I'm busy tidying up the weeds in my garden.

Ahhh... the new year. It's taken me weeks to find the words for this post, but here they are. I've finally found them.

You know, I think it's taken me a lot of time to really grow to this point in my etsy career. In April I will mark my third year on etsy, and considering I jumped in feet first with no plan, no idea what I was going to sell, no idea how I was going to figure any of it out... I just started listing things and making things, and learning things, and having that forever thirst for more knowledge. And the refusal to ever give up. ♥

This year, my goal is to really let the branches on the tree grow. I love so many things, and I want to share so many of them with you. This year I will find a way. This year, I vow to create more, and spend less time on the computer, which I hope in turn means, I'm doing what I really love. I'm doing what I want to be doing, what I should be doing... doing what I love.

I love soup. Yes, it's true. I love it. I don't eat it that often, because I don't really know any good soup recipes off the top of my head except chicken noodle, and if I don't know a recipe off the top of my head, the likelihood of my making it anytime soon is unlikely to say the least. I am at a loss...

I know my blog hasn't been all that exciting lately, and for that I am sorry. I know I've told you I have big new ideas up my sleeves and that I've been so excited to share them with you... but the truth is that winter has arrived in lovely Oregon, and that means wind and rain and grey days, and lots of them.

I don't mind the rain really, it doesn't bother me so much. But the endless grey days start to bug me after a while, because it makes photographing new things really challenging. Though the bright side is that spring is right around the corner here, and everything is busily turning green again, and I love that!

I did manage to photograph and list a few new picture frames in the home decor section of my shop last week, but I don't feel like the pictures are doing them any justice. Though it does give you a sneak peek of what's to come in my shop.

I love painting things... it's silly really. I don't consider myself a painter in the artist sense of the word. I haven't painted an actual painting since highschool, but I've always loved dabbling in paints, getting my brushes out, making strokes. And I'm having fun playing with different paint colors, seeing how they pair, how they layer, and then fussing them up and sanding them down. Fun! So you see... I am working on new things over here, it's just quietly and slowly because I don't have the right light to photograph anything new at the moment.

I've also been doing a lot of early spring cleaning and for that I'm super happy. I'll have some destash to list in my shop soon as well, and I'll be sure to tell you about it, as soon as it comes around. Mostly beads and such, but I also have some ribbon and other bits and baubles that I'd like to share, so hang tight, that's coming too, as soon as I can get a hint of sun around here!

Hope your days are going well, you're staying warm and enjoying this season for all that it is. Winter may not be the warmest of days, but it's refreshing and renewing for the earth to start it's new growing season soon... Winter must come, for spring to follow.

It's been rainy and grey here lately, and while I really can't complain because I do love this mild winter weather we have here... it makes photographing new items kind of challenging. It's driving me crazy too, because I have a new home decor line that I can't wait to add to my shop. I'll give you a hint... picture frames is where it's started, but who knows where I'll branch off to. Gosh I hope the sun shines today!

Catch you soon all, back to the work bench I go. I've decided that this year is the year I stop fluffing around online all the time, and really do what I want to be doing, which is creating new things. I like to be busy making things, a lot of things, all kinds of things... and so this year, my hopes are to explore that idea honestly.
