How-Tuesday... Teach so you can Learn

Today I had a bit of a light bulb moment with the whole teach so you can learn thing, but it came to me from a round about sort of way, because I am looking at it as, Learn so you can Teach.

I've never really thought of myself as a teacher.  Sure I can show you how to do something one on one, just me and you, but I've never had the guts to stand in the front of a room and teach a group how to do a task.  In fact, I barely made it through any presentation I had to give in high school or college, and still to this day, I am just not over here volunteering to stand up in front of people and TALK.  But.  The good news is that blogging gives us a voice that we might not otherwise know how to use, and for that I am thankful.

I have a small stack of books I am working on reading this spring, and you know I'll share with you what inspires me when I get there, but another book I have on my wish list is Blogging for Bliss.  This year I really want to find my blogging voice, and I think I'm getting there... though I'm sure some inspiration directed specifically at blogging would be helpful (duh, right?)

At any rate, I wanted to share a new idea I have with you, and am open to suggestions, because I'm going to try starting a new How-To section on my blog.  Now, I must say, since I am still trying to find my blogger training wheels, I'm going to start by making this a once a month goal.  I already know that doing weekly tutorials is more than I can handle, but I have tons of ideas up my sleeves (as I always do) and I'm starting to realize, that instead of always considering new ideas for my shop, perhaps I should simply learn new things for joy, and then share them with you too!  Yes yes, I know, I am kind of slow... You could say I've gone to the school of hard knocks when it comes to making a handmade living, and how to tie a blog, and a shop, and a lifestyle together, but I am learning.  So now comes the part where I learn to teach.

Teach so you can Learn is chapter 4 of the Martha Rules, and I thought I'd throw that in there for you, because I really do find this book to be of value for a variety of reasons.  Much of what I've read is kind of no-nonsense wisdom, which is the kind I like most, but I find myself having light-bulb moments and referring back to the book, such as I did today.

Next week I'll be posting my first how-to, so don't forget to check back.  I'll give you a little hint, it has everything to do with spring, and gardening!  And perhaps something that you could turn into a really cute gift idea too...

I read The Martha Rules eons ago and had forgotten all about it until you mentioned it the other day. It truly is an easy no-nonsense approach book (as you called it *smiles*). If I weren't changing gears, I might pick it back up too. All that aside, I think your "learn to teach" idea is going to be fun for you (and all of us!!). Looking forward to it!!

Teaching is very rewarding, I hope you enjoy the process! When I used to own an art school, teaching my classes was the favorite part of my day. I also love to learn new things often, and I am looking forward to your How To Tuesday!
